Much of the South Carolina countryside has been devastated in recent years by haphazard subdivision development. The new farmhouse is located on an old 80 acre strawberry farm approximately four miles from Clemson, a university town. The farm has been in the family dating back before the Civil War. The design could be read as a retrospective composition in what might have been; an attempt to appreciate the materials of the South Carolina topography and also the form of the time-honored style whilst at the same time make a modern response to both surroundings and everyday life. The scope of work on the project involved all phases of design, incidental engineering and construction management. In studying the forms in the South Carolina landscape JMK became conscious of the traditional farm architecture and farmhouse construction. The construction is timber frame clad in western red cedar shingles with an asphalt shingled roof. The house was designed to take advantage of the countryside views. The house has over three thousand square feet of indoor space as well as eight hundred square feet of porches. Daylight is effectively integrated with electrical lighting to produce integrated lighting design. The design also took advantage of natural ventilation as the windows and doors were strategically located which provided excellent cross ventilation. The screen porch was designed to reduce energy cost by shading the windows and walls in the warm months as well as providing a transition from inside/outside spaces. The front entrance foyer is located off the front porch
where there is also a living/dining connection. The kitchen and dining also
open up to a side porch with mountain views. A large 2 story family room
dominates the first floor with windows providing natural lighting and views
from the loft above to the site. The upstairs loft is adjacent to 3 bedrooms
and overlooks the main space below. The site of a previous farm house
demolished several years ago along an old road bed will become the main
entrance to the site. The existing farm house located nearby and 2 barns will undergo refurbishment after the construction of the new house is completed. This former stable and barn will be converted to residential use by converting it into a one bedroom apartment for rent by visiting Clemson University Professors. The conversion is meant to express the idea of a dwelling found within the repaired shell of the existing barn so that the history of the building is expressed and remains a part of the South Carolina landscape.
