There is a tremendous interest in sustainable design and green architecture today, as it has become the dominant topic in many research universities.  The American Institute of Architects defines sustainability as "the ability of society to continue functioning into the future without being forced into decline through exhaustion or overloading of the key resources on which the system depends".  As this interest continues to grow, a need has developed to provide a setting to promote and support research, education and public service in this area.  The Center of Sustainable Communities (CSC) was founded at Temple University Ambler to increase awareness of sustainable issues.  Joseph Michael Kelly serves as a Research Fellow for the CSC.  The CSC research covers many disciplines and includes long-term major research projects.  The CSC is committed to promoting an effective, holistic approach to land use planning and management, sustainable development, ecological restoration, and community revitalization.  The CSC promotes ecological building design research.  Early in the design process the supply of water, heat, cooling, electricity, natural ventilation, and lighting, need to be integrated into the building design.  The need for integrated building design between all the building services and systems is essential in the project delivery process.  CSC ecological building design research focuses on the protection of natural resources by utilizing solar energy, rainwater, greywater, natural ventilation, photovoltaic, wind energy and geothermal.  Buildings designed to be in harmony with the environment may lead to interesting new solutions, possibly even to a new architectural language.  CSC Research Fellows seek collaborative relationships with public, nonprofit, and private groups on various potential research and technical assistance projects.  CSC Research Fellows develop working relationships with other universities desiring to promote sustainable design and energy efficiency.
