Shamrock Farm, Anderson County, SC

1993 - 95

Shamrock Farm is a ten-acre parcel located in Anderson County. The design and construction of the house and grounds was accomplished by working closely with the landscape architect. The scope of work on the project involved all phases of design, incidental engineering and construction management for all trades of the construction.

The Shingle Style of architecture is distinctively American, incorporating various styles fashionable in the late 19th century (1870-1890). The architectural style of Romanesque Revival, Colonial Revival and the Stick or Carpenter Gothic Styles influenced the Shingle Style. The Shingle Style of architecture was often composed of complex geometric designs that are then covered with an exterior skin of wood shingles for the siding and roof. Wide porches, tall chimneys and geometric rooflines were also characteristic of the style. Freed from the doctrine of earlier architectural styles, architects designing in the Shingle Style were able to produce exceptional buildings. Architectural firms such as McKim, Mead and White, Peabody and Stearns and Henry Hobson Richardson created many stunning Shingle Style houses.

The Shamrock Farm Shingle Style house was designed with a curved façade to take advantage of the suns energy throughout the year. Daylight is effectively integrated with electrical lighting to produce integrated lighting design. To achieve this lighting levels were calculated to determine the amount of daylight provided within each room of the house.  The design also took advantage of natural ventilation as the windows were strategically located which provided excellent cross ventilation. A wrap around porch was designed to reduce energy cost by shading the windows and walls in the warm months. The complex design required curved beams, which were fabricated on site and hoisted into place.
