StillWater Pool and Tennis Complex, Seneca, SC

1996

The unique natural beauty of StillWater makes it one of the great land assets in the Piedmont region.  The property includes over two hundred acres of diverse topography and pristine virgin woodlands, leafy trails and frontage on scenic Lake Hartwell.

The new community was carefully designed by Dr. Lolly Tai with a sensitivity and a stewardship of the land in order to preserve the site’s most precious assets. JMK collaborated with the landscape architect to design a setting that would be fitting to the Foothills area. Further, the architect and landscape architect experimented with wind patterns, materials, light, climate, spaces, energy conservation and the characteristics of the site. The scope of work on the project involved all phases of design, incidental engineering and construction administration.

The pool and tennis complex is nestled within the natural woodland surroundings located close to the main entrance. The design incorporates natural materials: Tennessee fieldstone for the trellis columns and fireplace, cedar shingles for the building.  Inspired by wooden vernacular of the Piedmont region, JMK left most of the wood structure exposed. For energy conservation, louvers and vents were utilized to naturally ventilate the building. Close coordination throughout the project ensured that the project would be built to the original quality and intent, while maintaining the original project cost estimates. Great care was taken to enhance and protect scenic aspects of the project.
