The Stone Residence at the Seven Acre Point is located on the edge
of a designated area of outstanding natural beauty on scenic Lake Hartwell in Oconee County, the conception and the
realization of this project took nearly two years. The scope of work
on the project involved all phases of design, incidental engineering and
construction management. The
design and construction of the house and grounds was accomplished by working
closely with the owners and Landscape Architect. The team aimed to integrate the house sensitively into
the landscape while also maximizing views out across the lake. To this end
JMK and Dr. Lolly Tai, studied local and distant views and determined where
on the site the house would create the least visual impact on the landscape.
The house is limited to one and a half storeys in height, which follow the
contours of the site. JMK designed the Shingle Style house to take advantage of the magnificent lake views. The house has over five thousand square feet of indoor space as well as two thousand square feet of porches. Daylight is effectively integrated with electrical lighting to produce integrated lighting design. The design minimizes solar heat gain by orientating the house along an east-west axis. This orientation also catches the prevailing wind and enhances the benefits of natural ventilation. The design took advantage of natural ventilation as over seventy windows and exterior doors were strategically located which provided excellent cross ventilation. Night cooling via high-level windows reduces energy consumption further. The wrap around screen porch was designed to reduce energy cost by shading the windows and walls in the warm months as well as providing a transition from inside/outside spaces. The construction system and elevations are similar to other JMK designed houses. The design incorporates natural materials: Tennessee fieldstone for the porch columns and fireplace, cedar shingles for the house. The house also confirms JMK's evolution toward natural light and the natural movement of air within buildings responding to the climate of the site. The house lends itself to the enjoyment of the sensitive landscaping of the grounds and links to the natural environment. The landscape plant palette is composed of materials that are compatible with the surrounding indigenous plants. In addition to the natural planting themes of the exterior, visitors can enjoy an outside eating area, with stone walks and seating. Publications
and Exhibitions The Stone Residence at the Seven Acre Point was selected by Images Publishing Group of Australia as
one of the world’s best holiday houses and is featured in the book entitled "50+ Vacation Homes". The book celebrates the holiday home,
traditionally a place of rest, relaxation, and escape from the pressures of
the ‘real’ world. The Stone Residence at the Seven Acre Point was on exhibition at the Temple University Architectural Gallery in Philadelphia, PA in the winter of 2005.
